All NI and SM reanalysis experiments start from an initialized IC at January 1983, which was generated by assimilating HadSST2 data from January 1980 to January 1983.
All reanalyses assimilate NOAA SST data and cover the period 1983–2020.
NI & SM Hindcast
Hindcast experiments cover the period 1990–2020 and include 10 ensemble members.
The ensemble initial conditions for the hindcasts are prepared by repeatedly assimilatating obs on a 1-month forcast while varying the observation error.
SM Freerun
The SM freerun uses the same initialized initial condition (IC) from January 1983 and covers the period 1990–2020.
Should we consider starting the SM freerun from an IC taken from a historical simulation instead of an initialized IC? We plan to include EC-Earth in the supermodel, and studies suggest that EC-Earth tends to exhibit a declining AMOC when initialized directly from reanalysis ICs.
